Local Weather
Partly to Mostly Cloudy & Breezy with showers from time to time.
Lingering moisture in the atmosphere will allow for a few showers from time to time with a gradual decrease in winds. Therefore expect breezy conditions and shower activity to persist at least through Wednesday. Residents (and visitors) are still advised to use caution when traveling through low-lying and flood-prone areas, as flooding is still possible as showers continue to fall. Otherwise, mariners (boaters & beach-goers) should continue to exercise extreme caution in the open waters as the seas are still a bit rough and above-normal winds still prevail.
- Winds: are generally from the East to Southeast at 10 to 25 miles per hour, with higher gusts near showers upto 30 miles per hour.
- Seas: are moderate to fairly rough with wave heights between 3 to 6 feet, and will continue to gradually decrease. The Small Craft Advisory has been lifted.
Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Hurricane Irene.
* Irene strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Monday evening and is maintaining its strength as it continues to move Westnorthwest towards the Turks & Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas. As of 8am this morning, Irene had maximum sustained winds of 100mph and was located at 20.6N 70.6W or about 520miles NW of St. Maarten. Hurricane Irene does NOT pose any threat to the SSS (or surrounding) Islands; however shower activity and breezy conditions will still prevail for the next couple of days.
* Additionally, a tropical wave just off the coast of Africa or about 300miles SE of the Cape Verde Islands has a low (20%) chance of developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, as it moves West at 10mph. This system is about a week away, so it is too soon to determine when/where it will progress.
Special Weather
A moderate earthquake occurred near St. Maarten yesterday afternoon at 1:18pm (local time). The magnitude was 4.9 on the richter scale with an epicenter of 17.8N 63.0W or about 15miles SE of Philipsburg, St. Maarten. No damage reports have been received at this time.
Outlook for tomorrow
