236 days in, 129 days remaining

Hurricane Season:
85 days in, 99 days remaining

Today's Temps

Local Weather
Partly to Mostly Cloudy with a few showers from time to time.
As the moisture begins to depart the local area, chances for showers will also decrease over the next couple of days. However, a shower or two is still expected from time to time over parts of the SSS (and surrounding) Islands. Furthermore, wind and sea conditions have subsided and will continue their return to normal levels. Mariners (boaters & beach-goers) are still advised to use caution over the open waters, as the seas may still be a bit choppy in some spots.

  • Winds: are generally from the East to Southeast at 10 to 18 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts.
  • Seas: are moderate to fairly choppy with wave heights between 3 to 5 feet, and will continue to gradually decrease.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Hurricane Irene.
* Irene strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane this morning and is forecast to continue moving Westnorthwest through the southeastern Bahamas, before approaching the East Coast of the US. As of 8am this morning, Irene had maximum sustained winds of 115mph and was located at 21.9N 73.3W or about 716miles NW of St. Maarten. Hurricane Irene does NOT pose any threat to the SSS (or surrounding) Islands.
* Additionally, a tropical wave located about 100miles South of the Cape Verde Islands has a medium (50%) chance of developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, as it moves West at 10 to 15 mph. This system is about 5-6 days away, so it is too soon to determine when/where it will progress.

Special Weather
An intermediate earthquake occurred near Mineral, Virginia yesterday afternoon at 1:51pm (local time). The magnitude was 5.8 on the richter scale with an epicenter of 37.9N 77.9W or about 5miles SSW of Mineral, VA/84miles SW of Washington, DC. There were confirmed reports of a few aftershocks and the 'quake was felt up and down the East Coast of the United States.
