Local Weather
Partly Cloudy & HOT, with a few passing showers possible.
As (recently-upgraded) Hurricane Ophelia continues to move away from the local region, lingering moisture can produce a couple brief showers over parts of the SSS (and surrounding) Islands throughout the day. Therefore, HOT conditions and fair weather are forecast for this weekend. Also, winds are light to moderate and may slightly increase in and around showers, while sea conditions are mild to fairly choppy.

  • Winds: are generally from the South at 5 to 10 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts up to 15mph near showers.
  • Seas: are moderate with wave heights between 3 to 6 feet; and possibly higher in and around showers.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Hurricane Ophelia, Tropical Storm Philippe.

* Ophelia intensified to hurricane-strength yesterday and as of 8am this morning was located at 22.9N 62.7W or about 335mi North of the local region. Ophelia had winds of 105mph (Cat.2) and is moving towards the North-Northwest at 9mph. Ophelia is also expected to further intensify, as it moves further away from the Northeastern Caribbean and closer to Bermuda.
* As of 5am this morning, Tropical Storm Philippe was located at 21.9N 44.9W or about 1150mi
East of the Lesser Antilles. TS Philippe had winds of 45mph and is moving toward the Northwest at 13mph, bringing it to about where Ophelia is today within a week. This system is also expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours, before weakening.

We will continue to monitor the progress of these systems.

As this system moves slowly towards the Northeastern Caribbean, expect increased shower activity during the next 24 or so hours with a possible thunderstorm or two over parts of the SSS (and the surrounding) Islands. Some of these showers may be heavy and can cause street-flooding  in low-lying & flood-prone areas. Furthermore, wind and sea conditions are gentle to moderate and may slightly increase in and around showers.

  • Winds: are generally from the West-Northwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts near showers.

Daily Forecast: St. Maarten-St. Eustatius-Saba (SSS Islands)

Almanac

2011:
267 days in, 98 days remaining

Hurricane Season:
116 days in, 68 days remaining

Today's Temps
High: 87/31C, feels like 94F/34C
Low: 79F/26C, feels like 84F/29C

Local Weather
Partly Cloudy & Breezy with a few passing showers from time to time.
As the approach of Tropical Storm Ophelia pushes the system of high pressure out of the local region, chances for shower activity will increase throughout the day. Fairly breezy conditions will continue, and sea conditions will become fairly rough later today. Therefore, mariners (especially small-craft operators) should exercise caution in the surrounding and open waters.

  • Winds: are generally from the East at 8 to 18 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts.
  • Seas: are moderate to fairly choppy with wave heights between 3 to 7 feet; becoming rough with waves upto 8 feet.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Tropical Storm Ophelia, Tropical Depression 17.
* As of 5am this morning, Tropical Storm Ophelia was located at 16.9N 55.2W or about 430mi E of the Lesser Antilles and had winds of 50mph. Ophelia is moving toward the Northwest at 14mph and is expected to change little in strength as it approaches near the local region. TS Ophelia is forecast to pass just north of the local region on Sunday, bringing limited effects to the SSS (and surrounding) Islands: some passing showers and little to no significant wind impact, as most of the tropical-storm-force winds remain to the north of Ophelia's center.

* The tropical wave that formed off the African coast yesterday has developed into Tropical Depression 17 earlier this morning, and as of 5am was located at 10.7N 25.2W or about 290mi South of the Cape Verde Islands (near Africa). TD17 had winds of 35mph and is forecast to continue strengthening during the next 48 hours. This system also has the potential to become Tropical Storm Philippe later today; however, does not pose a threat to any land area for the next several days.

We will continue to monitor the progress of these systems.

Special Weather
None.

Outlook for tomorrow
Mostly Sunny with a shower or two possible from time to time.

Daily Forecast: St. Maarten-St. Eustatius-Saba (SSS Islands)

Almanac

2011:
266 days in, 99 days remaining

Hurricane Season:
115 days in, 69 days remaining

Today's Temps
High: 87/31C, feels like 95F/35C
Low: 78F/26C, feels like 83F/28C

Local Weather
Partly Sunny & Breezy with a few passing showers possible, mainly during the afternoon to evening hours.
A system of high pressure has moved into the local region, thus limiting the chances for showers. However, a brief shower or two is still possible over the next 24 to 48 hours, mainly during the afternoon to evening hours. Breezy conditions will continue into the weekend as sea conditions gradually deteriorate, due to the approach of Tropical Storm Ophelia (see below). Therefore, mariners (especially small-craft operators) should exercise caution in the surrounding and open waters as the seas become fairly rough.

  • Winds: are generally from the East at 8 to 18 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts up to 22mph.
  • Seas: are moderate to fairly choppy with wave heights between 3 to 7 feet; becoming rough with waves between 4 to 8 feet by Saturday, with the highest wave action along the Eastern-facing shores.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Tropical Storm Ophelia.
* As of 5am this morning, Tropical Storm Ophelia was located at 14.5N 51.0W or about 740mi ESE of the Lesser Antilles and had weakened to winds of 45mph. Ophelia is moving toward the West-Northwest at 13mph and is expected to continue weakening as it crosses the Atlantic. TS Ophelia may even decrease to a tropical depression by tomorrow, and is forecast to pass just north of the local region on Sunday. Therefore, effects of this system may be limited to just some passing showers and little to no significant wind impact, as most of the tropical-storm-force winds remains to the north of Ophelia's center.
We will continue to monitor the progress of this system.

Special Weather
None.

Daily Forecast: St. Maarten-St. Eustatius-Saba (SSS Islands)

Almanac

2011:
265 days in, 100 days remaining

Hurricane Season:
114 days in, 70 days remaining

Today's Temps
High: 87/31C, feels like 95F/35C
Low: 78F/26C, feels like 81F/27C

Local Weather
Partly to Mostly Cloudy & Breezy, with a few passing showers and a slight risk of thunder.
The tropical disturbance that brought a few showers to the local region yesterday continues to move West and away from us. However, moisture left behind the system may still cause periods of showers during the next day or two with a slight risk of a local thunderstorm. Minor street-flooding is still a possibility and gusty winds  can be expected in and around showers. Furthermore, wind and sea levels are forecast to increase slightly later today; therefore mariners (especially small-craft operators & beach-goers) should exercise caution in the surrounding and open waters.

  • Winds: are generally from the East at 10 to 20 miles per hour, with occasional higher gusts up to 25mph near showers.
  • Seas: are moderate to fairly choppy with wave heights between 3 to 7 feet; becoming rough with waves between 4 to 8 feet later today, with the highest wave action near showers and along the Eastern-facing shores. A Small Craft Advisory will be in effect as of 12pm today.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Tropical Storm Ophelia.
* A small tropical wave is now located about 350mi SW of the SSS Islands and continues to move Westward. Although the bulk of this system has already passed the local region, lingering moisture behind it will still produce a few showers and gusty winds throughout the next day or two.
* As of 5am this morning, Tropical Storm Ophelia was located at 13.4N 47.0W or about 1000mi E of the Lesser Antilles and had winds of 65mph. Ophelia is moving toward the West at 14mph and is expected to change little in strength as it crosses the Atlantic. The Northeastern Caribbean can expect effects of Ophelia by this weekend (late Saturday/early Sunday), if the system remains on the current projected track.

We will continue to monitor the progress of this system as it nears the local region.

Special Weather
None.

Outlook for tomorrow

Mostly Sunny & Windy, with few showers possible.
