Local Weather
Partly to Mostly Cloudy & Breezy with a few showers and a slight risk of a thunderstorm, becoming windy with heavy showers by evening.
As Tropical Storm Maria (see below) approaches the local region, winds and shower activity will increase today. Some of these showers may be heavy and will cause street-flooding; therefore residents (and visitors) should use caution when traveling through low-lying and flood-prone areas throughout the weekend. Sea conditions will begin to deteriorate by this afternoon and a Small Craft Advisory and High Surf Advisory will most likely be issued. Mariners (especially small-craft operators) should safeguard their properties and take neccessary precautions.
- Winds: are generally from the East at 12 to 22 miles per hour with higher gusts, increasing to about 30mph by tonight.
- Seas: are fairly choppy with wave heights between 3 to 6 feet, becoming rough with waves up to 9 feet. All mariners should use caution when traveling through the surrounding open waters, and should begin making preparations to safeguard their properties.
Tropical Weather Active Storms: Hurricane Katia, Tropical Storm Maria, Tropical Storm Nate.
* Hurricane Katia has winds of 85mph (category 1), as it moves towards the Northeast and further away from any land areas. This system poses NO threat to the SSS (and surrounding) Islands.
* As of this morning at 8am, the center of Tropical Storm Maria was located at 14.0N 56.9W or about 400mi SE of the SSS islands/185mi ENE of Barbados, and had winds of 40mph. Maria is moving West-northwest at 18mph and is forecast to affect the local area by this evening and into Saturday. Residents (and visitors) should begin making preparations for this approaching system.A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for: St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, Antigua, Anguilla, Guadeloupe, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, British Virgin Islands, and US Virgin Islands....meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for St. Martin, St. Barths, Martinique, Dominica, Puerto Rico, and Vieques & Culebra...meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within the watch area during the next 36 to 48 hours.
We will continue to monitor the progress of this system draws nearer.
* Tropical Storm Nate located near Campeche, Mexico has winds of 65mph and is drifting toward the Northwest at 2mph. This system does NOT pose a threat to the SSS Islands or the rest of the Caribbean.
Special Weather
* A moderate earthquake occurred yesterday around 9:02pm NL time (3:02pm local time) with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter Scale. Its epicenter was located near 51.8N 5.9E orabout 29miles S of Apeldoorn, The Netherlands/59mi SE of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. No reports of damages or injuries have been reported at this time
* Another earthquake occurred thisi morning around 6:11am with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter Scale. Its epicenter was located near 14.9N 61.3W or about 23mi SSE of Rosseau, Dominica/28mi NNW of Fort-de-France, Martinique. No reports of damages or injuries have been reported at this time.

Tropical Storm conditions, including heavy showers-thunderstorms-high winds, with localized flooding & rough seas.
