Local Weather
Partly to Mostly Cloudy with a few passing showers, and a slight risk of a thunderstorm or two.
As a tropical wave moves into the local area, showers and a possible thunderstorm or two are expected over parts of the SSS (and surrounding) Islands during the next couple of days. These showers may be heavy at times and has a potential to cause minor street-flooding. Therefore residents (and visitors) should use caution when traveling through low-lying and flood-prone areas in the coming days. Otherwise, wind and sea conditions are moderate with a slight increase in and around showers.

  • Winds: are generally from the East at 5 to 15 miles per hour, with higher gusts in and around showers.
  • Seas: are moderate with wave heights between 2 to 5 feet. Small craft operators should use caution when traveling through the surrounding open waters, especially near showers.
Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Hurricane Katia, Tropical Depression 14.
* Hurricane Katia is now at category 1 strength (90mph), as it continues to head off to the Northwest and further away from the local region. This system poses NO threat to the SSS (and surrounding) Islands.
* The tropical wave located mid-way between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles developed into Tropical Depression 14 yesterday afternoon, and as of this morning at 5am had winds of 35mph. The center of TD14 was located at 12.0N 39.9W or about 1450 miles E of the Lesser Antilles, and is moving Westward at 20mph. This system is forecast to continue strengthening and is expected to become a tropical storm today, which will be named 'Maria'. Residents (and visitors) should begin making preparations for this approaching system, as it is forecast to affect the SSS (and surrounding) Islands by early Saturday. We will continue to monitor the progress of this system as it develops.
* Additionally, another tropical disturbance located in the Southern Gulf of Mexico is showing signs of organization. This system has a high (60%) chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 48 hours, and does NOT pose a threat to the SSS Islands or the rest of the Caribbean.

Special Weather
