Local Weather
Partly Cloudy & HOT with a couple brief showers from time to time.
Fair weather is expected throughout the weekend, however a few passing showers may occur from time to time over parts of the SSS (and surrounding) islands. Also, as Tropical Storm Katia moves close to the local region (see below), sea conditions will deteriorate and winds will increase slightly closer to the end of the weekend (by Sunday). Therefore, mariners (especially small boat operators) are reminded to safeguard their properties in advance of the rough seas, as a Small Craft Advisory and High Surf Advisory will most likely be issued within the next 24 to 48 hours.

  • Winds: are generally from the East at 5 to 15 miles per hour, with higher gusts in and around showers.
  • Seas: are moderate with wave heights between 2 to 4 feet, becoming fairly rough with wave heights up to 8 feet by late tonight/early tomorrow.

Tropical Weather
Active Storms: Tropical Storm Katia, Tropical Depression 13.
* Hurricane Katia was downgraded to a tropical storm yesterday afternoon, and as of 5am, was located 17.0N 51.8W or about 750mi E of the Northern Caribbean with maximum sustained winds of 70mph (near hurricane strength). Katia is moving West-northwest at 15mph and is forecast to change little in strength today, but is expected to regain hurricane status over the weekend. This system is expected to pass North of the SSS Islands by late Sunday/early Morning. We will continue to monitor its progress.
* The tropical wave located in the Gulf of Mexico developed into Tropical Depression 13 yesterday, and has maximum sustained winds of 35mph. TD13 is nearly stationary with a forward motion of just 1mph in the Northern direction, and may possibly strengthen into Tropical Storm Lee before making landfall in Southern Louisiana over the weekend. This system is churning in the Gulf of Mexico and does NOT pose any threat to the SSS (or surrounding) Islands.
* Additionally, another tropical wave is located about 450mi S of the Canadian East Coast and has a high (60%) chance of developing into a tropical depression (or tropical storm) within the next 24 to 48 hours. This system does NOT pose any threat to the SSS Islands or the Caribbean.

Special Weather
A high earthquake occurred this morning at 1:55am about 27miles SW of Amukta Island, Alaska. It had a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter Scale with an epicenter located near 52.2N 171.7W. The Tsunami Warning for the U.S. west coast states, Alaska, and British Colombia (Canada) has been canceled as no tsunami danger exists, according to the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.
